If you are going to paint the exterior of your home or have someone paint the exterior of your home, there are a few things that you need to do before your home is painted in order to prepare it. Here are three steps you are going to want to take before you hire someone to paint your house or undertake the job yourself.
Wash Your Home
The first thing that you need to do is wash your house. Over time, dirt gets blown and splattered onto your home. Your home can get so evenly covered in dirt that it may not even look dirty; however, if you actually touch the side of your home and run your finger on it, you will discover that your home is actually really dirty, which is why the first thing you need to do is wash your home.
The fastest way to wash your home is by using a pressure washer. You are going to want to fill up the reserve with environmentally friendly soap. Then, you are going to want to work in sections, spraying the side of your home with the soap top to bottom, left to right. After you apply the soap, you are going to want to go back over the entire area with just water to rinse it all away. If any area of your home is really dirty, you may want to hit it up with a scrub brush before you rinse away the soap.
Remember to protect yourself when using a pressure washer. You should wear safety goggles and cover up your entire body; the pressure from the pressure washer can be intense and you don't want to get hit directly by it and you'll be exposed to lots of overspray as well.
Sand Away Loose Paint
If your current paint job is peeling, you cannot just paint right over it. Painting over it will not get rid of the peeling paint; it will just create a bigger mess for yourself.
The first thing you need to do is take a scraper and remove as much of the peeling paint as possible. To minimize the mess, put a plastic drop cloth under your work area so the soil near your home doesn't become contaminated with paint chips.
Second, after you scrape away the paint, you are going to want to sand the outside of your house so that it is smooth. You are not going to want to do this by hand; that could take hours upon hours of work to do. Instead, you are going to want to purchase or rent an electronic sander; even with this type of tool, sanding your house is a big job.
Remove Rotten Siding
If any of the siding around your house is cracked, damaged or rotten, you are going to want to remove it. You don't want to paint over siding that just needs to be replaced anyways. Pull off and remove the siding and have new siding installed before you have your house painted.
Doing these three steps before you paint your house will make your new paint job look more professional if you paint your house yourself, and if you have a professional paint your house, doing this prep work will save you a lot of money.
